Us and them

The growing popularity of the one day events such as the etape stages of the TdF is evidence that we weekend warriors like to ride the same courses as the Pro's...even if it takes us a lot longer. In fact the etape stage has become so popular that here is now two stages each year run for amateurs.

Some of the amatuer riders on these days are trying to win to get some recognition, and possibly noticed by some of the ProContinenetal teams or suchlike. These folks are not too shabby on the bike.

Given this stiff competition is was somewhat disarming to learn that on the second etape this year (the tougher one, in the Pyrenees) the winner was some 40 minutes slower than Mark Cavandish..not exactly known as a climber.

This winner would have missed the time cut required to start the next day.

Us and them indeed.
