In the 1994 Tour of Flanders Johan Museeuw, Franco Ballerini, Gianni Bugno and Andrei Tchmil were up against each other in the finale. Museeuw knew that Ballerini had no chance, so he offered him a whack of money to lead out the sprint. Deal - Ballerini knew he was the weakest, but as a pro had to make a living....
With one hundred metres left, Museeuw shouted at Ballerini to go, but the Italian didn't budge. By the time Museeuw realised he'd been tricked, the race was lost. Bugno had topped the Belgian's bid, just asking Ballerini to sit tight.
From this months Rouleur.
